For those who have always appreciated marijuana, 2020 only enhanced that appreciation. We know that marijuana sales and use surged during the pandemic. Some of us were lonely and were glad for some extra comfort. Others enjoyed being alone and reveled in the joys of a solitary smoke. Anxiety ran high and marijuana helped us to handle it. If you were lucky, you loved living in the new normal of working at home, and your home life was further enhanced with your weed habit. Throughout the challenges of the year, cannabis was there for solace, laughter, and just plain helping us to feel better.
It’s All in the Timing
The timing of our old habits is still there. You could be a dedicated stoner who tokes it up almost every day. You might be an occasional sampler, just dipping a toe into the water on a special occasion. Maybe you only get high when you’re with that one special group of friends. It could be you’re dealing with a medical situation and need help with pain relief every day, or with sustaining your appetite to keep up your strength.
Methods of Partaking
It’s not only when you get high that reveals a lot about you, but also the method you favor. Each method has its own unique qualities, links to myriad feelings and ways of looking at the world.
If you like smoking with a bong, it’s safe to say that you’re probably a stoner! When you think of bongs, it’s easy to picture the psychedelic, patterned glass bongs that adorn glass display cases in head shops. You might remember puffing on a huge bong during a trip to Amsterdam. A bong conjures up the classic image of the hippie who loves to get stoned.
But bongs are also a preferred method of intake for users of medical marijuana. Smoking with a bong is definitely a smooth ride.
Rolled joints are still the most popular way to smoke. This method is for the true connoisseurs of weed, those who don’t mind taking the time to master the fine art of rolling a jay. Yes, you do have to light it up and inhale the smoke, but there really is nothing like rolling a good joint. (I do need to pause here and pat myself on the back. I learned to roll joints in Amsterdam and can still roll a perfect joint with any size paper! K, nuff self-flattery 😁)
Setting aside the mad skills required, you have to admit that almost nothing is more nostalgic than the idea of sitting around with friends, passing a joint — in the golden days before the coronavirus. Every time it happened made you remember every other time it had happened. And we can’t wait until we are able to see those special friends again, remembering and simultaneously making new memories.
Those who use pipes are looking for something quick and discreet (or maybe they’re just a little bit lazy). Unless your pipe is brand new and fitted with a good screen, pipes are not the greatest way to smoke top-shelf weed. Resin builds up quickly and they are difficult to clean. Pipes tend to fall over when you set them down, spilling weed and ashes. Disadvantages aside, pipes are cheap, quick, and easy. And pipes actually use marijuana more efficiently than joints do, and they are more sustainable since they can be used over and over. So be sure to point this out to people who tease you about your beloved pipes!
Edibles are a great option for people who want all the advantages of marijuana without the inconvenience of smoking or vaping. These folks also love to have supreme control of how much they ingest. It may take longer to feel the effects, but they last longer with edibles.
Consider a Reset
You might be that rare bird who just wants more and more and more marijuana. You have strong opinions on quantity, quality, and frequency! If you find yourself always wanting more, I’m going to make a strange suggestion: give up marijuana. Don’t worry – it’s not forever! It’s just a temporary phase to help reset your endocannabinoid system. A cannabis reset will help bring your tolerance level back down, and you will appreciate your old hobby, and how great you feel, even more.
Vaping is the newest and most high-tech way to enjoy cannabis. The advantages are easy to see – vaping pens are discreet, and allow you to forego the difficulty of working with fire, as well as the smoke and aroma. And since you may have found that smoking irritates your throat, it’s natural to turn to vaping. (Stay tuned for a future post on what to do if your throat is irritated.)
Feeling Your Way
When you survey all the different methods of ingestion available, your choice is probably so obvious it doesn’t need to be explained. It’s all about how it makes you feel, and now more than ever we rejoice in our choices!
